Education and Outreach Coordinator at Mountain Top Arboretum

Mountain Top Arboretum is the only public garden in the Catskill Park and consists of 200 acres of meadows, gardens, forests, and wetlands. The Education and Outreach Coordinator develops, manages, and implements the Arboretum’s public program offerings to people of all ages. The Arboretum offers 40-50 public programs annually, in addition to occasional school and youth group visits and other tours or educational opportunities. In partnership with the Executive Director, he/she is responsible for curriculum development and lesson planning, program scheduling/planning and implementation, coordinating volunteer support, and promoting public programs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • In partnership with the Executive Director, develop, plan, advertise, and implement the Arboretum’s educational programming, including the 5-week Twilight Camp and other possible camp visits.
  • Works with fellow staff members to ensure proper coverage and setup for each program.
  • Ensure necessary supplies are purchased and available.
  • Ensure that public programs are promoted to the public, including adding programs to social media, the MTA website, e-newsletters and the ticketing website (Ticket Tailor), distributing flyers or postcards to strategic locations, and writing press releases.
  • Coordinates with guest speakers and educators re: logistics, including technology needs, arrival/departure times, honoraria, and other relevant details.
  • Recruit volunteers to assist with public and youth program implementation (as needed), including assisting the Chair of the Volunteer Committee.
  • Arrange educational opportunities for tour and special interest groups as needed.
  • Develop curriculum and associated activities for school and youth groups.
  • Attend community outreach events, including the annual Earth Day Celebration and other appropriate area festivals.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Assist with public outreach, stewardship and fundraising events, including the Annual Volunteer Recognition Day and Annual Plant Sale.
  • Assist the Executive Director and/or Horticulturist with special projects as needed.
  • Create rotating small exhibits and informational materials for the Education Center.
  • Works with Executive Director and Horticulturist to give tours.

Position Requirements

  • a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or other relevant subject area; a master’s degree in Museum Education is a plus.
  • Experience designing educational programs and/or curriculum.
  • Horticulture experience is a plus;
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office, social media outlets, and Squarespace or other website management platforms.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings as needed.
  • Excellent time management, communication and writing skills.
  • Desire to work with people of all ages.

The Education and Outreach Coordinator is a full-time, non-exempt position working 40 hours/week. Benefits include health insurance, complimentary dental and vision insurance, 2 weeks’ paid vacation, sick time, and a flexible schedule.
