Bronck Museums “Winter Woes” Curator’s Tour

Friday, October 24, 2025 (2:00 PM - 4:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

On Friday, October 24th at 2pm as the first chill of autumn creeps into the ancient Bronck houses please join Museum Curator Shelby Mattice for an exploration of the “Winter Woes” facing early European settlers. Cold short days, long, even colder dark nights, leaking roofs and drafty windows, food strategies, isolation, and insufficient warm clothing were among the concerns facing people during winters in the 1600s and 1700s. That is just the beginning, people in those centuries experienced an entire range of problems during the winter months we can barely imagine and what’s more they faced those problems with inadequate resources. Find out how shutters, buttons, knitting needles, and tallow became significant weapons in the battle for winter survival in early America. Reservations for this special content tour are appreciated and can can made at gchistory.org/2025-curator-tours. This is the final Curator’s Tour of 2025. The Bronck Museum is located at 90 County Route 42, Coxsackie, NY. Please dress warmly, the Bronck Houses do not have central heating.
