About
Unbridled Sanctuary is a nationally accredited 501(c)(3) equine rescue and lifelong sanctuary, founded in 2004 and now in its 22nd year of continuous operation. Unbridled protects horses, donkeys, and mules from harm, exploitation, and slaughter through direct rescue, emergency intervention, rehabilitation, and permanent sanctuary-based residency for approximately 65 equines at any given time.
Accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, recognized as an EQUUS Foundation Guardian charity, and rated at the highest level by Charity Navigator and Candid, Unbridled models rigorous accountability, governance, and transparency in animal ethics and care. The sanctuary has been honored as the 2021 Equine Rescue of the Year by the EQUUS Foundation and received the 2025 A. Gary Lavin Equine Welfare Award from the American Association of Equine Practitioners, affirming its leadership in equine welfare and reform.
Through innovative programs like The Stable Classroom, along with public art, civic engagement, and a weekly newspaper column, Unbridled invites students, families, professionals, and community leaders to recognize equines as sentient beings and to embrace responsible, lifelong guardianship. At the heart of Unbridled is a simple, bold conviction: ethical engagement with equines requires a lifelong commitment to their emotional, physical, and fiscal support—and Unbridled exists to make that commitment visible, actionable, and enduring in our region and beyond.
